Turtles (Tahitian name: Honu)
In Polynesia, there are two main species of sea turtles. The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is mainly carnivorous. It feeds on algae from sea grass bed, and eats small invertebrates and fish eggs. The hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) lives by the coasts. Known and sought-after for the quality of its scale, it is one of the species of sea turtles that is most threatened of extinction. Today, many actions are carried out in order to preserve the marine turtles.

| Whales |
For some years now, humpback whales have grown more numerous in Polynesian waters. Coming from Antartica and fleeing from the Austral winter, the females take this opportunity to give birth in tropical waters, as they are more favourable to the birth and development of whale calves. If you go out at sea not far from the coast or from the reef, you may observe young adults making splendid jumps. As for divers, assisted by a professional guide with an acoustic instrument, they can discover the wonderful sound of a "singing" male.

Scuba-diving in French Polynesia is famous for the highly varied and rich fauna (reef fishes, sharks, whales, turtles, etc.) but also for the marvels that can be discovered in the depths (wrecks, breathtaking sheer-drops). Tahiti and her islands have wonderful scuba-diving sites and seabeds, which enable beginners and experienced divers to make progress through the various training levels of their choice.
